Time | 2PM |
Location: Physical Description | First Canyon, Disappointment Creek, Talkeetna Mountains, AK |
Reporting a | Incident |
Type | River |
Water Conditions | +/-500cfs, ClassIII |
Weather Conditions | Nice Warm day when it happened, then it started to rain |
Boat Type | Alpacka 2014 Yak pack raft with zipper and gear inside — whitewater deck and thigh straps; Also older model stubby Alpacka with cruiser deck. No thigh straps. |
Motorized? | No |
Number of People | 2 males |
Number of People Wearing Life Jackets | 2 |
Other Safety Equipment Used | Dry suits, helmets, one person with elbow pads |
Event Description | Came down a chute between rocks and there was a sharp, freshly broken rock midstream. Hit it and it cut the first boat, then following boat also hit it and was cut on the bow |
Event Outcome | No injuries! But harder Class IV+ whitewater below led to change of plans. Hiking over to Class III Chunilna River (aka Clear Creek).
Some psychological stress as we were in a canyon with rain starting and so repairs there difficult. Also nice to know that the dry bag inside the tubes helped keep the thigh strap equipped boat afloat and from wrapping around the paddlers legs |
